10 Reasons Why you should not ask what your lawyer can do for you but what you can do for your lawyer to help you!

When asked why our law firm has had so much success, I often answer that the successful outcome would not have been possible had the client not collaborated with us. The truth is that a cooperative client is imperative in furtherance of any good case. This means, among other things, that you will be candid with your lawyer and also to disclose as much facts as possible.

Indeed, more evidence and facts that a lawyer has on the case, better are our chances to succeed. Facts are so important that someone said that law students should not go to “law” school but to “facts” school. If you are able to get your facts right, it is easier for your lawyer to assess your case and eventually win the case or advise accordingly. Therefore, first rule never omit or conceal any facts from your lawyer. On the other hand, do not expect your lawyer to make up the facts for you.

The popular belief that lawyers “make up a story” is wrong. Many might not know, lawyers are first officers of the court, then your advocate. This means that lawyers have to make sure that they are not filing frivolous claims or false evidence. Lawyers are not allowed to “make up stories”. The main task of a lawyer is to look at the circumstances of a case and then try their best to protect, defend or advance on a particular matter. Failure to do this can subject the lawyer to discipline.

We have written this short guide to provide some points how you can be of assistance to your lawyer so that your lawyer can serve you better

1.  Give your lawyer all the facts and do not omit any of them. Note that if you are telling one thing and want the lawyer to tell something else, the lawyer will not be able to take your case.

2.  Never underestimate your opponent. Whether it is the immigration services, the FBI, plaintiff or defendants, you have to be prepared that the other side as prepared or even better prepared than you.

3.  Do not rely on the advice of non lawyers especially consultants. Unless licensed to practice law, they are not allowed to give legal advices.

4.  Be realistic! Do not expect similar outcomes because you read about a similar case on the news or your friends believe that you have a big case.

5.  Do not lie to your lawyer. It always backfires.

6.  If you are not sure about something, make sure you disclose you are not sure about it.

7. Your attorney is supposed to decide on legal issues and strategize your case, do not force your attorney to take steps that the attorney believes are unlawful or improbable. The attorney might have to withdraw on your case.

8. Do not try to influence or intimidate witnesses.

9. Communicate frequently with your lawyer to know the status of your case.

10. Do not fail to pay your lawyer. Just like any other job, lawyers practice law for a living.

I have compiled only few points that you might want to consider in order to assist in your case. There are many other things that are important when you are represented by counsel. Remember you have a lawyer for a reason. Make sure you collaborate with your lawyer to get the best outcome on your case.
