United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) launching a campaign to encourage permanent residents to become US citizens!

Attorney Shah Peerally

There is an estimated 12.5 millions permanent residents (green card holders) in the United States.  According to USCIS, 7.9 millions of them are eligible for citizenship.  USCIS is launching a massive advertisement campaign to encourage these individuals take citizenship or be naturalized as a US citizen.  The benefits of citizenship includes but are not limited to the ability to travel, ability to get better job, but more importantly to vote.  The voting part is interestingly important especially  for the immigrant community because it allows this community to empower itself in the decision making of this country.

We highly recommend permanent residents to apply for their citizenship not only for the reasons mentioned above but also because being a green card holder is not a guarantee of infinite permanent residence in the United States.  For example, if a crime is committed or someone stays too long abroad, they might lose their status.

Having pointed out the advantages of a citizenship, there are few issues that the people applying for citizenship might face.  In case, anyone is faced with the situations enumerated below, we recommend you hire a good immigration lawyer to assist in the process of naturalization:

  • If you have been charged with a crime. It is important to analyze your crime before you file for naturalization.  For example,  although you do not feel it was a serious crime, it might still affect your citizenship application because it might be a  crime of moral turpitude;
  • If you have traveled and stayed for more than six month continuously outside the United States, you might have broken the continuity required to be able for file for your citizenship;
  • If you cannot read or speak English properly, you might not be able to pass the citizenship test unless you are subject to exceptions; and
  • If you are worried that you will not be able to keep dual citizenship.

There are lot of more reasons why you should consult an immigration attorney before you decide to file for your citizenship unfortunately we could not name all of them in this short article.   Furthermore, while the application form is not very difficult to complete, it also includes tricky questions.
