Waking up with AAmir Khan

By Maitreyee B Chowdhury

Maitreyee Bhattacharjee Chowdhury Being featured on Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people, which describes him as a ‘pioneer’, one of the most respected personalities in India, a man on a mission, AAmir Khan hardly needs any introduction.

Recently Mr. Khan supposedly refused an ad contract worth millions (crores) of Rupees, because it wasn’t socially relevant. While many might wonder what this means because AAmir’s ads haven’t always focused on socially relevant issues, one wonders if the actor will henceforth be seen only in socially conscious films and ads.

If social consciousness is on his agenda, one wonders when Mr. Khan will speak on behalf of the student community or even the immigrant community and different atrocities that happen with them. His show Satyamev Jayate, which focused on a lot of social issues including that of child abuse and female feticide problems has been silent on the issue of problems faced by college going students, and the hassles that they often have to face with bad management amongst others.

The Shah Peerally Law Group had covered the Tri Valley University scam and immigration issues of those in California would wish that more and more socially conscious celebrities come forward to talk about issues like this. The first edition of Satyamev Jayate had covered a vast variety of issues that ranged from female foeticide to domestic violence that has become a problem with women both within and outside the country.

Thousands of women find themselves in marriages where domestic violence is rampant. Women are mistreated, often beaten up and treated in inhuman ways possible resulting in complete loss of security and well being for the woman. But did you know that while AAmir Khan’s show has stressed on this recently, the Shah Peerally Law firm has been doing its bit to highlight these causes and more for quite some time now? Their short films on H4Visa a curse, which shows the plight of women in the US who are faced by extreme depression and domestic violence have created a stir in the immigrant community and also found many takes on Indian shores. The Law firm has also sent a petition to President Obama in a bid to seek changes in the conditions of these women suffering from H4visa

One does not know how long it will change for laws such as thee to change, but the fact remains that if Law firms like Shah Peerally’s can work hand in hand with celebrity star shows like that of Satyamev Jayate and bring to people the concerns of a large number of women, it is only the community which will benefit.

There are rumors that AAmir Khan is probably gearing to star in the second edition of Satyamev Jayate. He and his team must remember that there are many such issue that concern the global Indian and they would have great expectation from him in this regard.

Whether Mr. Khan’s second innings on television will be as successful as his first, whether his putting forward his image as a socially conscious citizen will go down well with his fans around the world are questions that only time will tell. In the meantime, let’s hope for more celebrities who come forward to speak about issues that matter to both the young and the old.

Celebrities like AAmir Khan have a lot of influencing power and if they can use it to do good and raise social consciousness, it would be a great combination. We shall of course wait and watch to see how things go on this front and keep you informed too!
